My Journey to Becoming a Librarian: Earning My Master’s in Library and Information Science

Graduation Is Around the Corner

It’s official! I’m on track to graduate in Spring 2026 with my Master of Library and Information Science. I started the program in Fall 2021, and it’s amazing to see how far I’ve come.

About eight years ago, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from California State University, Long Beach (Go Beach!) in 2016. It almost feels like a lifetime ago. I discovered theatre in high school and enjoyed it so much that I continued in college. But after graduating, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I just knew I was looking for something creative and meaningful.

Shortly after graduating with my BA, I started working part-time for the Los Angeles County Library as a Library Aide. I hadn’t been a big library user growing up, but I often visited my cousin at work as a kid and spent time at the CSULB library for study groups. So when I was offered the job, I accepted without hesitation.

How I Got Started in Library School

After eight months, I accepted a full-time position in another LA County department. For four years, I tried to return to the LA County Library, but ongoing hiring freezes made it difficult to secure a full-time role. Still, I missed the public library environment and was thrilled when I was offered a position as a Library Assistant II with Orange County Public Libraries.

Why I Chose San José State University’s MLIS Program

By the time I joined OCPL, I had already started taking online classes through San José State University’s iSchool. Even though I wasn’t working in a public library at the time, I knew I wanted to return. I also realized that earning my MLIS would open up other opportunities whether in public libraries, special collections, or digital resource management.

What’s Next After Graduation?

Now, nearly five years after beginning this journey, I’m close to graduating and excited about what the future holds. If you’re considering becoming a librarian or pursuing a degree in library and information science, I highly recommend looking into online programs. They’re flexible, affordable, and designed for working professionals.

Final Thoughts
