Did you know you can download free movies from the library? And not just movies, you have access to TV shows, audiobooks, eBooks, and music all through the Hoopla app. It is completely free with your library card. If you have a Orange County Public Libraries (OCPL) or Los Angeles County Library Card (LA County), you have access to Hoopla, a free digital streaming service.
Here’s everything you need to know to get started accessing free digital media.
What is Hoopla?
Hoopla is a free digital streaming service where you can instantly borrow:
- eBooks and audiobooks
- Movies and TV shows
- Music albums
- Comics and graphic novels
There may still be a few items that a not instantly available if only a certain amount of digital copies were purchased. You may have to put yourself on the hold list.
The best thing about borrowing digitally is the automatic returns. You don’t have to worry about any late fees.
How Borrowing Items Works
Each library system decides on how many items a patron can borrow each month.
- OCPL allows 6 borrows a month
- L.A. County Library allows 8 borrows a month
Once you reach your monthly limit, you will have to wait until next month before you can borrow again.
Daily Limit Tip
Some libraries may have a daily borrowing budget. If too many people check out the daily limit for the day, for example 500 then, you will have to wait until the next day to try and check out again. It’s best to check early in the day if you really want a title.
How to Sign Up for Hoopla
All you need is:
- A valid library card
- An email address
- A password you create for Hoopla
Step-by-Step Guide
- Download the Hoopla app (IOS, Android, or visit hoopladigital.com
- Tap Get Started
- Enter you enter email address and create a password
- Search for you library
- Enter your library card number and your PIN/password
- Your email and password will be your Hoopla login
Tip for Families
Kids Mode: You can toggle on if you only want your kids to have access kids titles.
Download before a trip: If you are taking a long road trip or plane ride without WI-FI.
Bonus Borrows: Sometimes Hoopla will give bonus borrows which are in addition to your normal monthly limit.
Multiple library cards: Access to more borrows. Each library card will have to be registered to a different email address.
