George Nye, Jr. Library (Lakewood, CA) -Los Angeles County Library Review

My rating : đź‘‘đź‘‘đź‘‘đź‘‘ 4/5 Great for toddlers, friendly and newly updated.

Overview

I have driven past this library many times and finally stopped in then my daughter had just turned one. I am always exploring new libraries, and this one was a great find. The George Nye, Jr. Library is located inside Mae Boyar Park which you can just walk across the small bridge to reach the playground on the other side of the street.

This branch is not large, but it is a wonderful neighborhood library that is perfect for families who live in the area.

Atmosphere & Staff

The staff are always friendly and welcoming. When we visit in the early afternoon, it is usually quiet, with just a few kids in the play area or using the computers. Staff mentioned it gets busier closer to closing time as people stop by to pick up hold or help their children with homework.

Children’s & Teen Areas

The children’s and teen areas are located right next to each other. The library offers:

  • Plenty of computers for kids, teens, and adults
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Laptop checkout when available

My daughter loves the children’s space especially the small couches in the play area. There is a puppet rack (she always grabs the elephants!), a play kitchen with pretend food and small table for coloring. The entire area is enclosed with bookshelves, which helps keep little ones safely contained and focused.

The Fish Tank

One of our favorite features is the small fish tank located right next to the children’s area.

This library offered Smarty Pants Storytime every Friday from 10:15 AM- 10:45 AM.

Programs

It is designed for children ages 2-5, but younger children are welcome. I take my one-year-old sometimes.

Registration is available, but this branch usually does not fill up to capacity. Larger branches may require registration, so always check with staff if you are unsure.

History

I found out this library had just been renovated in summer/fall 2024 and reopened on November 12, 2024. I love when libraries get refurbished. It sparks a little life back into them. Making sure they stay up-to-date with technology and the needs of the community.

The library orginally opened on February 22, 1973 a conbined effort from the City of Lakewood and Los Angeles County Library system.

The library was named after one of Lakewood’s earliest city council members and a former mayor George H. Nye, Jr., who passed away in 1971.

The building is about 7,100 sq ft of library space.

Why I Recommend This Library

It is a perfect spot to stop and take the kids after school. Great if you have a baby or toddlers and want to get out the house. It really feels welcoming to the public.
